Tripura University is a central university established in the year 1987. The main objectives of the university is “to disseminate and advance knowledge by providing instructional and research facilities” in the state in areas of contemporary relevance to the society and the country (with the motto “pursuit of excellence”) but to make special provisions for studies in tribal life and culture and to introduce vocational subjects with a view to provide employment opportunities to the students.

Maharaja Bir Bikram University (MBB University) in Agartala, Tripura was established in 2015. It is the only state university in the state of Tripura. The university is named after Bir Bikram Kishore Debbarman, the last ruling maharaja of the princely state of Tripura.
